Playboi Carti Type Beat Mastering: WLR Rage and Plugg Sound
Master the WLR-era rage/plugg aesthetic — distorted 808s, spacey mid-scoop, lo-fi rolloff, and that intentional pump compression that defines Pi'erre Bourne's sound.
Playboi Carti Type Beat Mastering: WLR Rage and Plugg Sound
Whole Lotta Red introduced a new aesthetic — "rage" production by producers like F1lthy and Pi'erre Bourne. The sound is intentionally chaotic, distorted, and punky. Understanding it helps you master in the same vein.
The Plugg/Rage Sound Blueprint
Mid-scoop: The hollow, "sucked out" feel of plugg production comes from removing energy in the 500–900 Hz range. Cut 1.5–2 dB broadly around 700 Hz. This creates the spacey, empty feel that makes Carti's ad-libs float above the beat.
Distorted 808: Unlike most trap where 808 distortion is a mistake, in rage beats it's intentional. Light saturation/clipping on the 808 sub (or in mastering, on the full mix) adds grit. A subtle bit crusher or tube saturation at low drive levels captures this.
Lo-fi high rolloff: Pi'erre Bourne beats don't have sparkly highs. A low-pass filter or shelf cut starting at 13–14 kHz removes the modern digital sheen and makes the beat feel rawer.
9 kHz hi-hat presence: This is the exception — crispy hi-hats at 9 kHz cut through the lo-fi texture. A narrow boost here makes hi-hats feel sharp and present against the darker overall tone.
Intentional Pump Compression
Rage beats often have audible compression pumping — this is not a mastering mistake, it's part of the character. Fast attack (2–5ms), fast release (30–50ms), ratio 6:1+, with 5–8 dB gain reduction creates the classic pump that makes the music feel like it's breathing.
Aggressive Limiting
WLR is loud and hard-limited. Target -8 to -9 LUFS for commercial release. The limiting artifacts (transient squash, harmonic distortion at high gain) are features, not bugs.
Listening Environment
Carti music is made for car speakers, earbuds, and Bluetooth speakers — not audiophile systems. Check your master on earbuds. If it still sounds aggressive and the 808 feels heavy, you've hit the right target.
